Anew Voices

The Anew Foundation has supported me in my recovery providing grants and loans for treatment as well as the opportunity to live in a sober residence for minimal rent. When I first moved into the house I did not know how to cook, clean a home or work to pay my own rent. The Foundation helped me learn these things. When I received financial assistance I was required to write essays about why I was seeking treatment. The loans were repaid through a payment plan of regular monthly installments tailored to my budget. It was the first time I was ever financially responsible for myself and it gave me a sense of independence and self-worth that I had never before experienced.

Anew Foundation helped me out when I didn't have anywhere else to go for help. Besides financial help, I learned more about giving to others and that everyone is important, no matter how long one has been sober or where one comes from.

It would be hard to overestimate the current and potential impact of the Anew Foundation on those trying to recover from addiction. The Foundation provides support through a unique model for housing, counseling and medical expenses. It is setting an example for the recovery community nationally. We are planning to investigate how the work of Anew Foundation might be applied in Baltimore and other urban centers.

I was a chronic alcoholic and drug addict with three small children who now has over 10 years of sobriety. The Anew Foundation made it possible for me to seek treatment. When it was time to be a mom to my kids again the Foundation was there, providing support and assistance as I set up my first home. Going to treatment saved my life. With the help of treatment and Anew Foundation, I have learned how to have a loving home with my children. I have learned by taking baby steps to be financially independent through the application of a loan and paying it back.

After a number of years of sobriety, I sought to start a sober school for adolescents recovering from addiction. The Anew Foundation supported me by providing classroom space for two years. Their assistance made it possible to double my client base and devote myself full time to teaching recovering adolescents. Today, we have two full time and three part time employees and ten volunteers who keep our offices open six days per week. We are currently helping about twenty-five sober students complete their high school education and college course work.

I came into treatment for drugs and alcohol addiction when I was contemplating suicide. I am grateful for my time in the Anew Foundation’s residence where the rent was affordable when I could only work in a low paying service job in early sobriety. Being able to live in a safer neighborhood while paying a relatively low rent meant that I did not have to worry about my safety or security. I learned to have pride in what I earned, getting self worth and self esteem by paying the bills and learning some basic life skills.
