History
The Taylor Scholarship Fund was created in 1993 by Susan Taylor to provide opportunities for addicts already engaged in long-term counseling.
The Fund’s first effort was a t-shirt project which inspired donations making possible the funding of 53 interest free loans and grants for medical and counseling needs of individuals in addictions treatment.
Recognizing that affordable housing was an important need for these addicts, a second corporation was formed in response and two houses were purchased.
A third entity, The Stanley Foundation, a 501(c)3 private foundation, was formed in 1998. After eight years of experience, these organizations revisited their mission and operations to strengthen and refocus the foundation’s efforts. In 2001, these entities merged becoming Anew Foundation, Inc a private operating foundation.
Anew Foundation, and its entities, Simplified Housing and Simple Housing, operated from 2001 through early 2010 providing grants and interest free loans for counseling, housing and medical needs to suffering alcoholics and addicts seeking assistance. In addition, 2 sober homes (begun in 1994 and 1995) continued to operate, providing safe, stable, affordable housing to over 230 men, women and children.
Instructions in life management skills were provided in the homes on a weekly basis. They included:
- Communication, problem solving, and conflict resolution
- Nutritional guidance, meal planning and preparation, and grocery shopping
- Personal hygiene and health care maintenance
- Home care and housekeeping
- Financial management and budgeting
As of April 30, 2010, Simplified Housing and Simple Housing discontinued the operation of the sober houses after 17 years of valuable service. We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked so closely with many recovering addicts in the homes as well as many dedicated volunteers.
On January 1, 2010, Anew Foundation began focusing its attention on the under served, low-income alcoholic/addict. Grants and loans have been provided to qualified applicants accepted by Anew Foundation.
In the fall of 2010, we again expanded our services, offering assistance in the Blue Hill Peninsula, Maine. We awarded a grant to Open Door Recovery Center to begin a satellite-counseling program in Deer Isle, Maine. This program, to begin operation in 2011, is in conjunction with Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and The Island Medical Center. This program served the Deer Isle, Stonington Community, at the Island Medical Center for one year, through February 2012. Anew Foundation is currently working with local residents, Alice Hildebrand, Babs McNulty, Martin J Snider and Charles Osborn, and the IMC to continue this program.
The Anew Foundation, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) organization providing financial support for the treatment and long-term recovery from alcohol and other substances in Central Florida and Maine.
